Lost and Found
General Information:
Have you lost your companion animal (pet)? Has someone you know lost their companion animal (pet)?
What to do:
-
Contact your local Humane Society or local law enforcement to report your animal missing, and see if there is a holding facility for stray animals.
-
If you are unable to locate your companion animal the first day, contact the local newspaper and place a lost ad with an accurate description of her and the area she went missing from.
-
Search for your companion animal. Ask your friends and family members to help you; it may prove very helpful in your companion animal finding her way home as she may be more likely to come to someone she knows. Remember, companion animals can become frightened or disorientated if they become lost, so please exercise caution, even with your own furry friends. Do not assume she will find her way home on her own; lost companion animals can become scared or may find themselves hurt…again make sure you continue searching for her.
-
Your mail carrier is an excellent source of information about animals in the neighborhood. You may want to let him/her know you have lost your companion animal.
-
Keep an identification tag on your companion animal along with her rabies and license tags. Proper identification can help others reunite you and your furry friend.

Did you find a companion animal?
What to do:
-
Use caution! If she were to bite you and run off, there could be serious health issues regarding rabies.
-
Contact animal control or your local law enforcement agency.
-
Try to coax the animal to you or into an enclosed area; never chase an animal to try to catch it.
-
If it’s a dog, use a lead of some sort (belts or shoelaces work well if you have nothing else) and gently lead it to a safe place. Even if you wish to hold on to the animal yourself, call your Humane Society or law enforcement. A call will help the appropriate agencies be aware in the event they are contacted by the animal’s owner. If you are asked to leave a message, make sure you leave your name and the number(s) at which you can be reached.
-
If you are unable to locate the owner of the animal you have found on the first day, contact the local newspaper and place a found ad with an accurate description of her and the area she was found at.
-
If you find an animal while you are traveling, contact local law enforcement and ask who can provide assistance to the animal you have found or transport her to the nearest town and leave her with local law enforcement.
-
Please do not ever leave an animal you are unfamiliar with alone with children.
-
Please do not assume the animal is neglected or abandoned…mistakes happen and animals escape…this happens a lot and the animal may just need your help in finding her way home.
