As summer comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on just how busy the past few months have been. The flow of cats and dogs through our doors has felt never-ending. Even our small animal room has been overflowing! Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, ferrets, lizards, and yes, even a tarantula have all needed our care.
While it’s deeply rewarding to help every animal that comes to us, these months have put a real strain on our shelter, emotionally and financially. Rising costs have led more families to surrender their pets, and keeping animals healthy, safe, and happy has only become more expensive. Veterinary bills continue to climb, the cost of living is higher than ever, and donations are down.
The need has touched every corner of the shelter. So many stray dogs and surrenders came to us there were times we had to set up temporary kennels to house all of them due to being over capacity. We are lucky to have such good relations with other shelters in the area. This gives us the opportunity to transfer some out to make space, but it doesn’t take long until we are full again.
At the same time, litters of newborn kittens have arrived weak, motherless, and in desperate need of round-the-clock care. Whether it’s a tiny kitten being bottle-fed or a stray dog receiving vaccines and spay/neuter surgery, every single animal requires time, love, and resources to prepare them for a second chance. And all of it comes at a cost.
